Welcome to Westgate Community Primary School website.

Westgate Community Primary School is situated near the hospital in the beautiful and ancient town of Bury St Edmunds, at the very heart of Suffolk. Bury St Edmunds is known as the ‘Jewel in the crown of Suffolk’ and is a very popular historic tourist destination known for its Cathedral, Abbey Gardens and town market centre.

Westgate Primary School itself has a large and spacious site, including a large sports field, as well as a good sized playground and gym trail. We take children from the age of 3 into our Nursery (mornings only) and have two classes for each year group, Reception to Year 6; children leaving at the end of Year 6 usually move onto King Edwards High School.

Our school is a warm and friendly place to learn, where children follow the National Curriculum led by an experienced and energetic staff. We are also privileged to host a Hearing Impaired Unit enabling all children to experience opportunities to learn sign language. All children in the Hearing Impaired Unit are fully integrated into their mainstream class.

Westgate is a committed community school and as such, looks to support our children and families in a number of ways. Alongside our team of teaching staff we also have a large number of support staff; amongst other areas, we offer children significant support for Speech and Language as well as having a fully trained ELSA specialist. We have a dedicated member of staff who works alongside families to offer support and as a link to other agencies. We also have close links with the Westgate Support Group run by the local church.

We do hope you take the time to look through the various links on our website. If you have any questions or would like to arrange a visit to see the school for yourself, please do not hesitate to get in touch.

Message from the headteacher:
Dear Parents and Carers and other visitors,

I would like to introduce myself as the headteacher of Westgate Community Primary School; my name is Jenny Cockett and I joined the school in April 2018 as an experienced headteacher who has worked in education for the last 18 years, most of those in Suffolk. I am very proud to have joined such a wonderful team of teaching staff, support staff and governors to lead a continuing journey of improvement and development to ensure that all children have the best learning opportunity possible; we aim to create a happy, secure and stimulating environment in which all members of the school community can grow in self-esteem and develop their full potential.

We are very proud of our role within the community and believe in an effective triangulation process between home, school and child where everybody is encouraged to work closely together. Parents and Carers are encouraged to take part in their children’s education and are welcome into theschool whenever possible.

Please feel free to book an appointment and visit us during the school day to really understand how we work.
